This excellent and supensful tale is not quite what you expect, despite its influence on popular culture. It is gripping, easy to read, and at times suprisingly brutal and frightening. With undertones of drug-addiction and homosexuality, it is also a facinating historical comment. No film version has been entirely faithful to the book, so its definitly worth a read. Told in various narritive styles, it produces a frightening sense of realism and a potent comment on the duality of self and the hypocrisy of society.
Much like Breakfast at Tiffany's, I was surprised to discover this book is much smaller than I had thought it would be. After all, the book is so thin and yet it has had such an impact on the literary world. But, even though the idea of the book is quite interesting, there's only so much that could be written without changing the book dramatically.
Although I know it has had such a lasting impact, and the idea itself is really quite interesting, I found myself not enjoying it as much as I thought I would. Oh, don't get me wrong, there were parts that I really quite enjoyed, and I know it's a very good piece of work, but by the end I just found it simply okay. A good book? Sure, and it's a very quick read (my copy is only a mere 79 pages long), but I can't bring myself to rave about it. It's okay, though, but nothing much more.
