Robert Heinlein is deservedly one of the grand-masters of science fiction, and this book "Starship Troopers" is one of his more influential books. It works really well, as a story, and as science fiction. It still reads well, despite the passage of time since it was written. At the time it issued, one of the significant surprises, that modern readers will overlook but which had great impact at the time, was that the main character Johnny Rico was black, a fact revealed somewhat deep in the story. Heinlein is at his libertarian best in the society he depicts here - voting and citizenship only available to warriors, and a militaristic society. For those readers who are literal in their politics, this may spoil the story, but for the majority, the alternative take on a society, which has many parallels to ancient greece the cradle of our western civilisation, will be mind broadening. This is a classic science fiction book; if you havent read it, you cant be a science fiction fan.
This is the original novel of Starship Troopers penned by Robert Heinlein. Arguably better than the movie, it was a groundbreaking novel at the time it was written due to the open look at military criticism and advanced warfare concepts, some of which have been adopted or are under review by the US Army. Oddly enough, it is also the most borrowed book in the US military library.
A good read if you want something to tide you over for a rainy weekend. The story of Johnny Rico and his training for the military and subsquent sevice is quite entertaining. The aliens he fights and the injuries that people can sustain from these beings is really remarkable. Something for the lovers of freaky stuff!!
