If you're only going to buy one Gaskin book, buy "Ina May's Guide to Childbirth". ALthough, I found this book interesting, a lot of the information is outdated and it's maybe a little "too hippie spiritual" if you're not hugely into that sort of thing. Ulitmately Ina May's most important message is that a woman's body is perfectly designed for birthing and we need to trust that. I feel her other book better explained this.
As a soon to be father wanting to be there for my lady during the birth of our child, this book was a manual for the entire birth process, as well as a bonding tool for us both. Its honest, down to earth style, and the beutiful birth stories within were antidote for the medical model surrounding us. Spiritual Midwifery is EMPOWERING.
Ina May is a such an inspitation to me and aspiring midwife. The book is beautiful and educational and the photo's are gorgeous. A definite must have for anybody interested in birth...
Ina May Gaskin is an icon in the midwifery field as well as to parents who are questioning the norm of birthing in hospital amongst strangers and medical machines. I must admit that this book is not my scene - I am not 'new age' by any means. Having said that, I must recognise and acknowledge the amazing work that Gaskin does on the Farm, even now. This book has changed the lives of many people over the years and because of this, I must recommend it as a a world leader in its field.
The book that started it all for me! Wonderfully enlightening and inspirational to those embarking on a career in midwifery, or those pregnant couples wanting to birth consciously and naturally. The best part about this book is that it is filled with wonderful births stories demonstrating the huge variation in childbirth experiences.
The most enlightening book about holistic birthing. Full of wonderous birth stories to nourish you and help your journey to birth. Posative woman centred language, written with care and respect for pregnant and birthing women. An excellent reference also for midwives,doulas,partners and birth support people. I would also recommend lending it to anyone who has difficulty convincing others of the wonders of home birth. I cannot reccomend this wonderful book highly enough!
