It's important to note that Nouwen did not write this book in its present form: it is his course in spiritual direction supplemented by unpublished writings and put together by two of his longtime students. Having said that, however, the book is a delight. I have just begun a spiritual director's formation course and am finding it both useful and stimulating. It's well up to the standard of his other books that I've read.
It is divided into three sections: look within to the heart, look to God in the Book and Look to others in community. Its main concern is laying the ground for spiritual direction to take place, so it is useful both for the seeker and the director. If you find Nouwen's writing speaks to you, you will enjoy this book.
