Though more than half a century has passed since the Spanish Civil War began in in 1936, it is still the subject of intense controversy. What was it that roused left wing sympathisers from all over the world to fight for a cause for which their governments would not give active support:? This text presents an objective analysis of a conflict - where fascism and democracy, communism and Christianity, centralism and regionalism were all at stake - and one which was as much an international war as a Spanish one.

Having read Thomas' brilliant "The Slave Trade" I read this to see if lightning would strike twice. And it did. Again, "The Spanish Civil War" is a long book, heavily researched and full of detail, but also it is still readable. What was paricularly good was the way he showed the international nature of the war, and also how he handled the battles and the eventual defeat of the government forces. Thomas truly is a formidable writer and historian.
