"Daydream Nation" is the kind of gorgeous monstrosity (born of extremes, rife with difficulties, and mythic in proportion) that can crush the will of the most resilient, well-intentioned listener if the necessary preparations haven't been made. In this book, Matthew Stearns explores the album from a range of angles, with input from the band members themselves.

"Daydream Nation" is considered one of the best rock records of all time, and so this book is a fine addition to the 33 1/3 series.
The book is structured in a very accessible way, with a section devoted to each side of the double LP and sub-sections devoted to each song. The book gives very detailed background information from each song and is endlessly fascinating regarding the meanings and origins of the songs.
Matthew Stearns does have a frustrating tendency to write rather hyperbollically which can be grating. However, what he writes is enthusiastic and likeable for the most part, written in a casual, understandable tone that is devoid of too much musical jargon (any of which is explained in footnotes).
The book is perfect for newcomers to the album or Sonic Youth, or those who just want to understand more about this impressive piece of music. Overall, the book is fascinating, informative and above all enjoyable.
