Ok, I have not had much sleep since my sons were born. My first-born was impossible to get to sleep, and I read every book I could get my hands on. This book is a gentle approach to the sleep issue, and I think if you are having problems with sleep in your home, my advice is - get a few books, and choose what you feel most comfortable with. This book should be one of those. Very reassuring, and not so hard line as some controlled crying books can be.
This is not a book about how to sleep train your baby. It is not a step by step guide, or a quick fix, so if that is what you are looking for you should go elsewhere. It is a book that explains a lot of the physiological and psychological needs of babies and provides strategies to help parents plan for meeting a child's needs in a responsive way. Proponents of "Attachment Parenting" will be right at home with this book.
This book is recommended by the La Leche League as it is pro-breastfeeding, gentle parenting and parent-infant bonding. It contains a lot of information that is familiar from other gentle parenting books but as McKay is an Australian author, I find her style more palatable and less reactionary and emotive than many American authors who write on similar material (such as William Sears et.al.)
This was a well written book... easy to read, helpful and reassuring. A lot of the advice was common sense, but sometimes when you're sleep deprived you have trouble thinking straight - so the book was helpful in reinforcing what should be 'natural' to parents. I particularly liked that there was no control crying involved!
This book is AMAZING!! It is very well written & easy to read for those sleep deprived parents. It is full of gentle techniques & ways to settle your baby & plenty of warm, nurturing advice. It is not an advocate of controlled crying & gives reasons why. This book helps those parents who don't feel quite right about letting their babies cry & gives reassurance about doing those many things that feel natural to do when helping your child sleep better. I would highly recommend it.
EXCELLENT! By far one of the BEST sleeping/babycare guides I have ever read! Compassionate and sensitive information and easily adaptable to each individual baby, rather than a rigid 'rulebook' on what your baby "should' be doing
