INTO THE CROSSHAIRSMarine Sniper Sgt. Jack Coughlin carried his specially designed bolt action rifle— and its nearly magical scope— into a landscape of sandstorms, firefights, and chaos during Operation Iraqi Freedom. As marines charged through the desert and leapfrogged through bizarre, treacherous urban battlefields, Coughlin and his sniper teammate did their job and did it well: One by one, they spotted their targets— up to a half a mile away. And one by one their targets died. Coughlin has more than 60 confirmed kills. INTO THE ACTIONIn this extraordinary account from battlefield Iraq, Coughlin tells the story of his own unique war, from stealthy, slowly-unfolding long range kills to unplanned firefights— and how one sniper team adapted and thrived in a battle zone unlike any they faced before… INTO THE HEART AND MIND OF A WARRIORWith vivid portraits of Coughlin’ s fellow marines and the battles they fought from Al Kut to Baghdad center, SHOOTER takes readers to the frontlines of the war in Iraq and gives a brutally honest account of a man trained to hunt humans, who had the courage to do his deadly job— and live with it once the shooting stopped. “ One of the best snipers in the Marine Corps, perhaps the very best. When I asked one of his commanders about his skills, the commander smiled and said, “ I’ m just glad he’ s on our side.’ ” — Peter Maas, war-correspondent and bestselling author of" Love Thy Neighbor"

"The 3rd Battalion has a veteran sniper, Staff Sergeant Jack Coughlin, for whom the war in Iraq was only the latest of many wars; he fought in Mogadishu, too. On the first day of battle at the Diyala Bridge, he had eleven kills. He is one of the best snipers in the Marine Corps, perhaps the very best. When I asked one of his commanders about his skills, the commander smiled and said, 'I'm just glad he's on our side.'" -Peter Maas, war correspondent and bestselling author of "Love Thy Neighbor"

This could have been a great story but the authors seem to have messed nig time when joining it all together. Not too much combat at all. I just wish tey'd had better editors! Don't buy it with great expectations.

Well, where to begin? For a novel? (autobiographical) that purports to be ghost written by a professional author, this is a disgraceful load of old cobblers. It barely maintains a narrative and for want of a nicer way of putting it, reads like an adolescent fantasy based on computer games and too much American Prime Time TV!
The USMC does not 'rate' or 'rank' it's snipers, nor do they work alone to be ranked as such. Marine snipers are teams of two and wildcat operators are not in any way encouraged. His self aggrandising series of vignettes barely brings the reader on board, it more leaves the questioning mind asking questions like:
"If he is half as good as he says he is, why did they keep him in the rear with the gear"?
"Can you really tell a senior officer to "F off" and get away with it in Uncle Sams military"?
"Why would his wife leave him when he is such a top bloke"?
"What fantasy land was he living in when he INVENTED the concept of mobile sniping!!!"?
You get my drift, this book is about as historically accurate as a Commando war comic but without the cool cartoons!
