"It came to me then, like a chilly draught from an unseen gap, that I had always known in my deepest heart that it would be like this, a slipping away from a life full of people I had come to love, in a place I had helped to shape, in a land I had helped to free." The time has come at last for Elspeth Gordie to leave the Land on her quest to find and stop the computer machine Sentinel from unleashing the deadly Balance of Terror arsenal. But before she can embark on her journey, she must find a lost key. And although she has long prepared for this day, nothing is as she anticipated. Reading the Obernewtyn series has often been a test of patience. I have been reading this series since I was about fourteen and have enjoyed it immensely but the long waiting time between books has been frustrating at times. For instance The Sending was originally envisioned by Isobelle Carmody to be the final book in the series and was to be released ten years ago but since that time it has been split into three books. The reason given by Carmody was because she wanted to flesh out and resolve several plot points.
After a bit of a rocky start it soon will become apparent that Isobelle Carmody has made the right decision for fans and although its not perfect it certainly sets the story up for a thrilling conclusion and also keeps fans on their toes by quashing any assumptions they had as well as taking Elspeth down a path that I personally never expected.
This is certainly a book for established fans already and I would recommend that new readers start at the beginning of the series with the first volume titled "Obernewtyn" Also if you're going to read this make sure you have plenty of honey, milk, bread and chocolate hand because Carmody's descriptions of foods will leave you famished.
