Renowned Italian artist Roberto Innocenti, a child himself during World War II, brings a child's war story to life in this honestly wrought book. This unflinching tale of ethics and compassion is unforgettable in its illustrations and observation.
Reviews
Singling out the "astounding" paintings, PW called this WWII tale of a German girl who discovers the horrors of a concentration camp "a stunning book and a forceful argument for peace." All ages. (Sept.)

A most compelling book to read and share with children. It is both beautifully written and tragically illustrated. It gives the reader a huge insight into war through another's eyes. Although it is a deeply saddening book, it gives a great impression of life in wartime through a child's eyes. I think this book is an absolute must in any school library.
