Naomi Aldort is an eloquent proponent of the simple idea that children need love and validation, rather than control and behavior modification. The result is the disappearance of power struggles and the emergence of closeness and cooperation. Aldort teaches parents how to listen effectively when children express strong feelings, and how to recover their ability to love, validate and offer comfort to their children when they, themselves, are upset.

I had this book recommended to me but found it disappointing. It fails to take into consideration any other worldview besides the author's own humanistic, evolutionary perspective. While there are some valuable tricks and techniques, this book is not for everyone. Borrow it before you buy it.
This is an inspiring book on parenting, showing us a way to develop respectful, moral behaviour in our children without resorting to the punishment & reward framework. Aldort encourages us to notice and explore our reactions to & labelling of 'misbehaviour', to find a way to put those reactions aside, and truly attend to the intention & need of the child in the moment. This book is about a respectful way to guide our young people through the world. It is engagingly written & easy to read, even when distracted by children!
Very interesting although I am a bit cynical of some of the case studies (some seemed a bit concocted) BUT if you are an open minded and loving parent then this is by far the most useful parenting book you could possibly come across.
Parents who follow the philosophy of attachment parenting may be familiar with Naomi Aldort and her articles. Whether you have heard of her or not, this is a great book for developing a respectful relationship with your child.
Does the thought of no more punishments, bribes, distraction-techniques and manipulation appeal to you? Then you need to get this book.
What an awesome book. Written by an author who's focus is Attachment Parenting (but you don't need to be into AP - co-sleeping/demand breastfeeding etc). It totally takes the pressure off parenting and off our relationship with our children. Such an easy read too and gives practical examples on how to deal with certain situations and gives a different perspective to most mainstream parenting books/TV programmes. Her discipline philosophy is not about punishment and as a lot more parenting books are advising - praise is not necessarily a good thing. Well worth the read.
