Written decades after the original Foundation, Prelude chronicles the beginnings of Pshycohistory and is set prior to the events in the original "Foundation"
Asimov has lost none of his flair for good story telling and this volume in the series loses nothing in comparison to the earlier works.
If you have read the other volumes in this series, then you must read this, as it is a worthy prequel and adds gives much information about the reasons for creating the foundations and the development of pshycohistory.

Prelude to Foundation is an after-series prequel, if you will. The bok look sat the eariler life of Hari Seldon while is is developing and presenting his theory of psychohistory.
Not such an easy process, and he gets married along the way, as well as dodging more than one violent attempt on their persons. Luckily, the spousal unit is handy with a blade, as far as this goes.
