IN PRACTICE focuses on interviews with a group of New Zealand women doctors who trained in the 1970s and who are now prominent in the medical world. There are 14 profiles in the book. Some of these women are Dr Jacquie Blue, breast physician; Dr Helen Rodenburg, President of the Royal College of GPs; Dr Ruth Highet, sports physician and doctor to Olympic teams; Dr Hilary Liddell, gynaecologist; Dr Robyn Toomath, endocrinologist and spokesperson on children with obesity; and Dr Papaarangi Reid, Director of the Eru Pomare Maori Public Health Unit. As well as interviews relating both their personal and professional stories, the book will include breakout boxes with statistical information and other facts relating to the status of women in New Zealand. A charitable trust has been established from the royalties to provide support for women student doctors from lower socio-economic backgrounds. These stories illustrate the old slogan 'the personal is the political'. This book will provoke discussion and debate as to the role of 'feminism' in society today.
