Much more than simple principles and platitudes, The Power of Now takes readers on an inspiring spiritual journey to find their true and deepest self and reach the ultimate in personal growth and spirituality: the discovery of truth and light. In the first chapter, Tolle introduces readers to enlightenment and its natural enemy, the mind. He awakens readers to their role as a creator of pain and shows them how to have a pain-free identity by living fully in the present. The journey is thrilling, and along the way, the author shows how to connect to the indestructible essence of our Being, "the eternal, ever-present One Life beyond the myriad forms of life that are subject to birth and death." Only after regaining awareness of Being, liberated from Mind and intensely in the Now, is there Enlightenment.
About the Author
World-renowned spiritual teacher Eckhart Tolle conveys simple wisdom that transcends any particular religion, doctrine, or guru. His #1 NYT bestselling book is a modern classic in the field of personal growth and spirituality; Oprah Winfrey credits The Power of Now with helping her to "get through September 11, 2001" and she featured it on her December 2002 "Oprah s Favorite Things" show. A native of Germany, Eckhart Tolle attended the University of London, and upon graduation went on to become a research scholar and supervisor at Cambridge University. At 29, a profound spiritual awakening virtually dissolved his personal identity and sparked a radical change in the course of his life. It marked the beginning of an intense inward journey and he devoted the next decade to understanding, deepening, and integrating that transformation. For the past ten years, he has acted as a counselor and spiritual guide, facilitating sold-out groups in Europe and North America. He lives in Vancouver, British Columbia."
"The Power of Now is one of the best books to come along in years. Every sentence rings with truth and power."
The Power of Now is a great book and presented well for the main stream many of whom probably hadn’t so much experience with methods like Vipassana meditation of mindfulness practice. Eckhart also modernizes and integrates many of the experiences on a “daily life” level that practitioners of Vipassana or mindfulness meditation would come across in their usual practice. For this reason this is a very valuable book for many beginning practitioners. On the other hand people who have read this book, practiced the techniques and began to feel like they need more would get a lot out of learning Vipassana or other styles of deep awareness meditation with an experienced teacher. As far as I’m concerned the two are the same. Good on Eckhart for making these principles available to the mainstream!
I read this book maybe 10 years ago close to the first publication, I have raved about it ever since. He gives powerful and insighful information about staying in the now and how to be happy in the present. I had my husband read it and my 4 children and all my friends. I still have the copy as it is always current and useful, imformative and spiritual. In my opinion, it will never be outdated. Don't only buy it, add it to your collectorsas an all time classic spiritual book.
As cliche as it sounds, The Power of Now changed my outlook on life. Eckhart manages to both simplify ancient spiritual teachings and make it relevent to this time and place. This book appeals to the intellect, but to be understood deeply must be read with the 'internal mind'. If you can put aside your rationale mind and try and absorb this from a deeper place in your soul, it will transform you. To those who have been trying to understand their purpose and the meaning of life, this will give you a renewed sense of faith and hope. What I found personally appealing is that it rings so true. It does not rely on religion or a belief system even, but pure logic. Also the teachings in the book are consistent in itself. Whatever faith you are of, this book will inspire to go deeper into your own faith and discover the real you.
I found this book very interesting, and loved the fact that Tolle does not refer to any one specific religion. He describes his concepts about enlightenment which sit with any religion. It is straight forward and his questions and answers style of writing is very easy to read - almost like a conversation rather than essay style writing. I recommend this book to anyone interested in developing their beliefs of spirituality and enlightenment.
A wonderful book for those of us who question why we are really here. It gives great insight into knowing who we really are! Easy to understand language makes this book a pleasure to read. Simple ideas and principles, no alignment with any particular religion makes it accessible to all! This book will definitely be a 'stayer' on my book shelf! Highly recommended - but also read his other book 'A new earth'
Am only 30 pages in and already repetitive reading as its so thought provoking....but immediately understand why couple close female friends say they dont get it.....spiritual enlightenment will not happen when one is not completely honest with ones self....and willing to let the baggage go!
There is nothing new in this book like all those kinds of books but the key point is Eckhart himself has true and deeper experience for what he wrote in his book. In other word, some same kind of writers do not really know what's real meaning for awakening and enlightenment so they can not write down such amazing book with easy understanding writing style that actually comes from author's deep insight.
