'Young, wild, free-spirited; exciting, thrusting, dynamic; competitive, resourceful, up-and-coming.' These are just some of the terms that could be used to describe the author of this new book on Australia. True, they might be equally applicable to Australia itself. Take your pick. With an old friend and an obstinately empty notebook, Peter Knight spent seven weeks travelling wide-eyed round this vast country. Making light of his handicap (the empty notebook, not the friend), he has now reconstructed the story of their amazing journey, punctuated by sharp accounts of Ashes combat, which had tempted them there in the first place. Up the coast, across the outback and through the desert, by car, train and aeroplane, the full richness of their tour is recaptured here. A Pom Down Under is replete with incident, controversy and wry observation of Australia and its people. It is one man's small picture of a very large island.
