K-Gr 3-When two peregrine falcons decide to build their nest on the ledge of a downtown skyscraper, they become the talk of the town. Soon they are hatching eggs and raising a family, and their most mischievous chick, Perry, wants to see Charm City. Beauregard takes his son on a tour, highlighting tourist attractions such as the Maryland Science Center, Fort McHenry, and Camden Yards. The tour also introduces famous Baltimoreans such as Edgar Allan Poe, Thurgood Marshall, and Johns Hopkins, and even touches on old Baltimore traditions. Harrell's watercolor illustrations are evocative, if somewhat bland in color. The book is ultimately less of a story than a catalog of the city's landmarks, and the use of the anthropomorphic birds is both contrived and distracting. However, the highlights are well chosen and offer a solid, if basic, introduction to the city's major points of interest.-Kathleen Kelly MacMillan, Maryland School for the Deaf, Columbia Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
