About the Author

After graduating in languages at Cambridge University, Hugh Shankland worked several years in Italy as a teacher and painter. In 1966 he founded Italian Studies at Durham University, retiring as head of the Italian Department there in 1998. He has published books and articles on Italian language, literature and general culture, as well as several literary translations.
