This is the first one of Gena Showalter's books I have ever read and while it is not the best book I have ever read, I really enjoyed reading it. Valerian comes across as a very arrogant sexual beast (a male nymph), who has always had women falling over themselve for him to touch them and make love. He has never had any woman turn him down, so cynical Shaye is an extreme surprise. Valerian and his men kidnap Shaye and other women from a wedding with the purpose of bringing them to Atlantis for the warrior nymphs (a nymph grows stronger and can heal injuries with sex). Imagine Valerian's surprise when he realises that Shaye is his mate and that he will never want anyone other than her for the rest of his life. Shaye spends most of the book resisting Valerian until she realises that she doesn't want to leave him and she loves him. I think it would be a better idea to read the books in order of the series to appreciate references to the recent past in this book.

SHOWLATER, Gena
The Nymph King 2007 Otherworld
Valerian is the king of the nymphs, one of the races the gods created before their spectacular success with humans. Nymphs are notoriously sexual, and their pheromones can’t ber resisted by humans, which is fortunate since the nymph women have been taken captive by the dragons, and since sex is necessary to nymph males to build their battle strength, they have taken to kidnapping human women and bringing them back to Atlantis. Not that the women mind. Nope, they are happy little vegemites. The last thing a nymph male wants to find is their life mate, because that means they will no longer want another women, or in Valerian’s case, a threesome of other women. to his horro he discovers his mate in a new kidnap victim. to his consternation he discovers that not only doesn;t she want to follow him to Atlantis, the way all the other women at the wedding party want to, she doesn’t want HIM. Of course he doesn’t know that Shaye is so cynical about males thanks to her mother’s countless marraiges and boyfriends that she will fight her desires to the death. All he knows is he’s stuck in the unenviable position of being a mated nymph whose mate says that horrible word, ‘No.’ [Dpn’t worry, all you romance lovers, this is a Showalter book. ‘No’ is not going to last]. If that’s not bad enough, Poseidon suddenly realises that his water creations are going against his orders and sends the Dragons to attack. And then of course there are the vampires . . .
