A shocking and highly readable expose of the state of the food production industry in Britain today. Felicity Lawrence will take some of the most popular foods we eat at home to show how the food industry in Britain causes ill health, environmental damage, urban blight, starving smallholders in Africa and Asia, and illegal labourers smuggled and exploited in Britain.

Not on the Label took a long time to read due to being so in-depth, however that was the aspect I enjoyed most. Given I have read many books about the food industry, I expected to be entertained, but not educated. Happily, it taught me more about the food industry than I had expected - showing many aspects of the food chain and making me question every new piece of information which was presented.
This book, incidentally is written by a New Zealander now living in Europe. Lawrence investigates the way food is produced, how the people who produce it live, and what impact the large supermarket chains in the UK are having not just on the producers of our food, but on the consumers as well. It seemed shocking to me that there are places in London where the people struggle to buy food, but this, it would seem, is the impact of big business.
I would have liked to have had more information about the New Zealand sode of this -- whether supermarkets engage in the same practices, and whether New Zealand is producing food in such unethcial ways, but it certainly is something to thinka bout when visiting the supermarket.
A disturbing must-read. For all of those people who are curious about what goes into your chicken nuggets, or how supermarkets can charge such low prices. This investigation is a real eye opener about the food industry in Britain. However, there are probably many people who do not want to know about this because it's just easier that way - I encourage you to read this book it might change how you look at the world.
