A beautiful book - I grew up as a child reading my Mother's German translation which she had received as a wedding present and was ecstatic to find the new edition with which to start my own household.

Sometimes, when I'm having a particularly bad day, I take down this book and open it up to the section on how to arrange your self-sufficient farm on 1 or 5 acres. "All we would need," I beg my husband, "is five acres! And then we could keep 2 cows! One to milk and one to eat." His response? "You're a vegetarian."

This is such an inspiring book! Amazing detail on every aspect of self-sufficiency. Written for the Northern Hemisphere, it takes a little bit of readjusting to Australian seasons, but that is the only down side. Other than that, I can't recommend it enough.

This is an awesome book! I bought it for my husband as a Christmas present and he's barely looked up from it since.

John Seymour writes with the humour and insight which only a man who had spent his life pursuing both the dream and reality of a self-sufficient life could possess. And what a life he has had! The beautiful forewards and prefaces bear witness to the legacy of this passionate husbandman/ craftsman/ universal man who lived a rich and beautiful life on various holdings well into his 90s. The book is thorough, clear, eloquent and beautifully illustrated.

It will be a powerful inspiration - and, I believe, a valuable refrence tome - for anyone interested in the values and practices of self-sufficient living, whether that interest is casual or all-consuming.

My only wish is that John had written a companion volume which specifically addressed the challenges of the Australian climate.

Buy this book. You won't be disappointed.
