I own this book and also recommended it to my Calligraphy group. There are wonderful sections on Italic and Copperplate. But Lisa Engelbrecht goes beyond formal calligraphy and puts a modern spin on lettering styles, tools, surfaces and the use of colour and texture.
Chapters include Tools and Surfaces; The Basics (Techniques); Classic Italic & New Variatons; Copperplate; Pointed Brush Letters; Rough & Edgy Letters; Playing With Your Letters; Lettering With Fabric & Stitchery; Breaking The Rules (incl using everyday tools); Flourishes; Gothic; Mixed Media & Letterforms;
This is a beautifully presented book - more for exploring, trying new ideas and putting your own spin on things - not a formal "how to" book. As well as Lisa's work, there are some wonderful projects by other artists pictured in full colour. These range from paper to journalling to mixed media on fabric.
My only quibble is that while the artist for each of these projects is noted, the techniques or names of scripts/variations are not mentioned. This could have been a useful addition for those wanting to find out more about the creative process.
