The third in the Black Dagger Brotherhood series, this follows Zsadist, the most fearsome and volatile of the Brotherhood with a horrific past as an abused blood-slave behind him; even his comrades find him hard to trust and understand at the best of times, and the only one who seems to care for him is his brother Phury, who saved him from slavery many years ago. However, the vampire beauty Bella has become fascinated by him, but she is captured by the Lessening Society and goes through horrible torture at their hands. Zsadist obsessively searches for her and succeeds in rescuing her, and tries his best to heal her while he himself has to come to terms with his past and his own unhealed wounds.
This is a wonderful example of paranormal romance, and easily the best Black Dagger Brotherhood novel to date. Zsadist is a truly interesting and genuinely tormented protagonist, and Bella is a strong and compelling heroine. The book also plays around with gender roles found in romance novels somewhat, with Bella doing the majority of the courting while Zsadist is the emotionally vulnerable one, which was interesting and never felt forced for a second. The stories and development of the other characters are also handled quite well, especially that of Phury and newcomer John. The romance is sublimely and very satisfyingly done, and is deeply touching. A must-read if you’ve been following this series so far, and fans of Anne Bishop and Sherrylin Kenyon will find something to keep them happy in this book too. Very highly recommended.

This is definitely my favorite of J.R. Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood series and that's because how can you help but fall in love with Zsadist, the vampire tragic hero? Kidnapped as an infant and sold into slavery, Zsadist is deliciously dark and dangerous. The vampire Bella was kidnapped in book two, 'Lover Eternal', and is rescued by Zsadist, who wants Bella with an uncommon passion, but can't get past his own demons to make her his.
A must-read for Ward fans, and worthy of a place on the To Be Read stack of all paranormal romance lovers.

The third book in the series and it is compelling reading. Zsadist and Bella have a love story worth reading about. His life has been so tragic. Can Bella soothe this sore Brother? Read on because the characters are worth caring about and the story races along like the others in the series. A real page turner that you won't be able to put down.

Definitly my favourite book of the Black Dagger Brotherhood series! Zsadist and Bella's story keeps you totally absorbed from the beginning right to the end. Couldn't put this one down and would recommend this series to anyone, best to read in order though.

This is definitely my favourite of the first 3 books in the series. Zsadist and Bellas story keeps you hooked from the beginning right to the end. JR Ward writes fantastic characters and this storyline ensures you go through all the emotions of the main characters. Even though this story is about Z and Bella, JR Ward makes sure that the other members of the brotherhood are not left out. By the end of this story you will be hanging out for more!!!

great story, very satisfying mix of tragic drama, action and feel good moments, with sexy scenes that have heart as well as lots of heat. love the dialogue which is smart and snappy. zsadist is a hero with real depth, had tears when i read of his past, the author really develops his character well. almost my favourite of the series.

First Wrath, then Rhage and when you think the brothers couldn't get any better you meet Zsadist. This has become my favourite out of the first 3 stories, it will keep you up late, I couldn't put it down. The black dagger brotherhood are HOT!!!

Another great installment from the Black Dagger Brotherhood. Zsadist, the bother we all loved to hate up to this point, transforms into a glorious member of the brotherhood. This book is as addictive as the first two and I can't wait to read the next one, and the one after that, and the one after that. Get my point.
