Rob Bell is speaking the language of today and asking the questions of today better than just about anybody else. Some of his presentations of the Christian gospel (the 'positive' aspects) are fantastic -- really powerful. But he presents the clear message (in his hard-to-pin-down, all-I'm-do…-questions manner) that hell is nothing but short term consequences of our actions, and in the end God's love will overcome every obstacle and all will be saved. (So he still says he believes in hell, but he redefines hell). He presents that part of the Christian gospel which is currently well received (God's love), but he removes that part which is currently unpopular (God's judgement). The Christian gospel should be hard to swallow, because it's hard to hear that without Jesus people will be judged for their sin with eternal consequnces -- but that's not the gospel of Love Wins.
Refreshing change from the hardline Calvinistic doctrine we tend to hear from the pulpit, church sermons have tended to instill fear and condemnation onto people and not focus on the love of God; "God is love". I have heard many a time from the pulpit that you will lose your covering if you leave church, fear tactics designed to stop the church losing their flock.
This is an extremely intresting book and Fishpond have got it for a great price and I would recommend it for anyone who likes a long, detailed read. It's one you're sure not to forget in a hurry, one of the better books I have read this year for sure. It take's itself a bit too seriously though, I think it could've benefitted from a final editting.
