On the first day of May, 100 teenage boys meet for a race known as ?The Long Walk.? If you break the rules, you get three warnings. If you exceed your limit, what happens is absolutely terrifying...
Ray Garraty-along with 99 other teen boys-has entered the Long Walk, a grueling march at four miles per hour that continues until only one person is standing. The losers receive bullets to the head. As the march progresses, the numbers dwindle, the challenges of continued marching increase, and the senselessness wears on the participants' state of mind. King (writing as his alter ego, Richard Bachman) delivers another psychologically dark tale with commentary on society, teenage life, and cultural entertainment that is still poignant decades after its original publication. Kirby Heyborne's skills shine in the narrative passages, which he executes with a good mixture of rhythm and emphasis. Heyborne's light and youthful-sounding voice exudes the needed attitude of the mostly male adolescent characters. However, some of his character voices for the teens feel created just for the sole purpose of clearly distinguishing them, rather than matching voice organically to personality. His female voices lack substance, but since there are so few of them, listeners will not be too distracted. A Signet paperback. (Apr.) Copyright 2010 Reed Business Information.

Completely different, enthralling, twisted and an amazing look at the possibilities of society and the human psyche. One of Stephen King's best, in my opinion. I couldn't put it down, I told so many people about it that I am sure Mr King owes me a few sales!
Brilliant. I can't say enough about this book. Not light, not fluffy, deeply disturbing and nail bitingly odd. A strange plot, and somehow terrifying.
this is a most excellent novel from stephen king, truly chilling and sometimes a bit hard to read as the characters strain to pull through the events which unfold before them. personally i think the only other tales to rival this that he wrote are "the running man" and "the stand"
This is a very well written story and holds lots of depth of story and of characters, it is about a challenge where people have to complete a long walk, this walk is almost beyond human capablities, they can't stop or sleep, they have to go to the bathroom and eat while walking, the penalty for breaking the rules is death. It doesn't sound much, but this story is brilliant, very clever and edge of your seat, frightening in a very human way
THE LONG WALK is a brilliant novel that explores the depths of the human condition. Most of the Walkers have no idea what they have gotten themselves into once they begin the walk. It isn't until the first shot is fired that most of the walkers realize exactly what is going on: that they are walking towards their deaths. As the Walk progresses the Walkers learn a lifetime of knowledge about themselves, about each other, and about humanity. How should a person live? What makes life living for? How is it that a group of strangers can become closer than brothers in a few hours? Is life just a game or is it a journey? The novel illustrates that even those who have the best odds and the most to live for in life can be felled by the same diseases, illnesses, and temptations as everyone else. The novel also is full of social commentary, through the observations about the ever-present and ever-growing Crowd that surrounds the Walkers. How can people become so hardened that they cheer people on to get "ticketed" right before their eyes? This is just one of the issues that THE LONG WALK examines through the engaging tale it tells.
The LONG WALK is easy to read and after the first few chapters of exposition and set-up becomes a page-turner. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book and will read it again and again. I highly recommended it.

SO strongly written, this is essentially a story about a parallel society to 90's America, where perhaps a military junta has occurred. Having said that, the above is sub context to the details of human interaction under extreme conditions which is where King writes his best. If there is only one copy of this book, and one hundred people want it, make sure you are the first to walk over & grab it... but what happens when the journey means more than the destination?
This was originally part of book of short stories (including the story, which would then be made into the wonderful Stand By Me). This story sends shivers down my spine, it's so sad and tragic, unbelievable but also very believable.
Imagine how much faster, higher, longer elite athletes could go if pursued by gun toting police licensed to shot after second warning?
I was totally drawn into the story (as I find it very easy to come under King’s spell as I find his writing fascinating). I am sure you will find a character to identify with, and you will find that they will stay with you long after you have finished reading.
