It is estimated that four to six million people around the world suffer from Parkinson's disease; around 80,000 of these are in Australia. After Alzheimer's, Parkinson's is the most common neurodegenerative disease and the number of people with Parkinson's disease in 15 of the world's largest nations will double over the next generation. And because the median time from onset to death is 12.2 years, people with Parkinson's live with the disease for a relatively long time compared with diseases such as cancer.
