Gr 3-6-Laura Ingalls Wilder fans will rejoice at the fine presentation of her novels in audio format. Cherry Jones brings to life Pa, Ma, Laura, and all the other characters. Performed at the right tempo for the intended audience, Jones changes her voice just enough for each character so they can easily be distinguished. Singing period songs as Pa, exclaiming with delight over some new discovery as Laura, or gently scolding as Ma, Jones keeps listeners entranced. Pa's fiddle music, performed by Paul Woodiel, enhances the presentation. As with the print versions, putting the books' content into the context of events which happened over 100 years ago will help intermediate students understand why a song about "darkeys" would be included (Little House in the Big Woods), and why certain attitudes toward minorities, particularly Native Americans, are acceptable to the characters in the books.-.Judy Czarnecki, Chippewa River District Library System, Mt. In little House on the Prairie, Laura Ingalls Wilder tells the story of her family's move from the Big Woods of Wisconsin to the proaries of Kansas. Pa Ingalls has decided that the Big Woods is too crowded, so he and the rest of the family - Ma, Mary, Laura, baby Carrie and Jack the bulldog - head west in a covered wagon to 'Indian country'. The journey is long and sometimes dangerous, but the family finally finds a good spot on the prairie to build a home. There, life is filled with new experiences, including encounters with the Indians, who are both grightening and fascinating to young Laura. Eventurally the government decides to move all settlers out of Indian Territory, and the Ingallses must leave their little prairie home. They pack up their belongings, say good-bye to the other settlers, and head out in the wagon once more. An absolute classic that is an absolute must read with the children.
Laura's Pa decides that the big woods have become too crowded so he moves the family west to Kansas in a covered wagon. What follows are some amazing adventures told in Lauras attractive writing style which has ensured that these books have never been out of print. Well worth the read
"Little House on the Prairie" is the second book in the "Little House" series.
This is an excellent series and I recommend that you read the whole series in order and then read on with the books on Laura's daughter Rose's life by Roger Lea MacBride.
The stories are full of valuable moral lessons which need no explanation.
In this book the family leave the "overcrowded" big woods in search of a home on the open prairie. They get to meet some interesting characters and some native Americans too.
My children were apalled that Laura had to give her treasures to the baby just because Mary did... The books are written so well that you really can feel strongly about such small incidents.
This really is a great book.
