The authors-an American journalist of Ukrainian ancestry and a Ukrainian-born scientist living in the United States-write with greater enthusiasm and affection than is normally found in guidebooks. They offer an interesting overview of Ukraine's complicated history and even give us the lyrics to the Ukrainian national anthem, "Ukraine Is Not Yet Dead" (which must lose something in the translation). Information on visas, transportation, lodging, weather, and sightseeing is also included, as are chapters on the major cities (Lviv, Kyiv, Odessa) and other regions such as the Crimea. About half the book is given over to acquainting the traveler with the Ukrainian language, which is making a comeback after decades of imposition of the Russian language, and how to transliterate the Cyrillic alphabet into the Roman.
