Originally published in1994, this best-selling guide to scenic and culturally rich Ukraine has been completely revised and updated for this fourth edition. Detailed information regarding visas and customs, airlines, tours, hotels, shopping, sites of interest, insight into Ukrainian history, culture and local traditions, plus new colour photographs and maps make 'Language and Travel Guide to Ukraine' is a goldmine of information for travellers. About the AuthorLinda Hodges and George Chumak ReviewsThe authors-an American journalist of Ukrainian ancestry and a Ukrainian-born scientist living in the United States-write with greater enthusiasm and affection than is normally found in guidebooks. They offer an interesting overview of Ukraine's complicated history and even give us the lyrics to the Ukrainian national anthem, "Ukraine Is Not Yet Dead" (which must lose something in the translation). Information on visas, transportation, lodging, weather, and sightseeing is also included, as are chapters on the major cities (Lviv, Kyiv, Odessa) and other regions such as the Crimea. About half the book is given over to acquainting the traveler with the Ukrainian language, which is making a comeback after decades of imposition of the Russian language, and how to transliterate the Cyrillic alphabet into the Roman. Highly recommended for public libraries.-Mary C. Kalfatovic, Telesec Lib. Svcs., Washington, D.C. ""[Is] unique and should be invested in." |
