About the Author

Patricia Grace has won many awards for her work, including the New Zealand Fiction Award for Potiki in 1987, and being longlisted for the Booker Prize in 2001 with Dogside Story, which also won the Kiriyama Pacific Rim Fiction Prize. Patricia lives in Plimmerton near Wellington on the ancestral land of Ngati Toa, Ngati Raukawa and Te Ati Awa in close proximity to her home marae at Hongoeka Bay.

The Kuia and the Spider was a favourite story in my home as a child. A story of two proud Matriachs competing in an attempt to prove who was the greater weaver. Most New Zealand families especially in the Maori culture have a female figure who stamps their mark upon you. This enchanting childrens tale is about women just like that. Through beautiful illustrations and wonderful writing this book shows a fun and warm side of a great art and gift that is traditional Maori weaving. I loved it and now my children love it too.
