Simple and lovely, this is more of a narrative than a "how to". The era in which the author had his initial experiences gives him more credibility, in that he's not just another californian new-age "product". I liked the fact that he has relationships with "simple", sometimes despised creatures- not just large and magnificent ones. For him, communication with animals has been a path to humility, rather than one to "specialness" and it's attendant egotism. I really liked this book na ddevoured it on a train ride home- and couldn't even put it down to make the dinner! It only took and hour or so to read, but is worthwhile and sweet and interesting.
