This book is an interesting read...
It starts from the traditional myths and spiritual beliefs of the ancestors of the maori people and their arrival to new zealand. The intervention and colonisation by European powers is cover; the treaty of waitangi and its affects on the maori people are outlined. It goes on to explore how the maori people managed to retain their culture as it came close to extinction because of policies of assimilation; and how maori are still fighting today for their indigenous rights to land and cultural independence. It is a compelling read and should be read by all New Zealanders and all visitors to New Zealand for a better understanding of the complex cultural history that surrounds political and ethnic affairs in contemporary Aotearoa.

A passionate contribution to New Zealand History --- originally published in 1990, it presented a uniquely Maori perspective from Ranginui Walker of Whakatohea iwi...
This revised edition contains two new chapters (over 100 pages) and discusses issues right up to 2004, including the foreshore/ seabed issue, the hikoi and Don Brash's Orewa speech...

I got this for my little brother for his year 5 project on New Zealand, and can I just say, this book is informative, interesting, and very very useful. I've been reading it myself, and it is great for context essays in English. I love it even more because it is from the perspective of a true Maori.
