Be it that you are an amateur wine lover, or a professional in the game you cannot go past James Halliday. It's great to read reviews on wines from a professional point of view then drink them yourself and compare notes! Also if like me you are in the wine sales game it's great to be able to give clients an idea of the wine if you havent already tasted it yourself!!

Halliday is reliable year after year as a guide to the best Australian wine. Originally this annual provided information on Australian and New Zealand wines, but the size of the task grew too large a few years ago. Halliday has also concentrated the book on only providing reviews of the best wines. This can prove frustrating when you look up large volume standards such as, say, Penfolds Koonunga Hill Cabernet Shiraz, and find that it is not reviewed. It's then hard to know whether it has been left out because it wasn't up to scratch or just that James didn't receive any to review!

I've found over a period of 15 years or so that I generally agree with James when a wine is very good. That's not somwething I can say with all critics. I buy a copy every year in August upon the annual release.
