Acclaimed author Skloot brilliantly weaves together the story of Henrietta Lacks--a woman whose cells have been unwittingly used for scientific research since the 1950s--with the birth of bioethics, and the dark history of experimentation on African Americans.

An absolutely fascinating non fiction novel about the most important woman in modern medicine who you've never even heard of. Henrietta Lacks, an Afro American woman born in 1920 in Virginia and dead by the tender age of 31 from a disturbingly strong strain of cancer, was the unwitting donor of a sample of cells that would go on to transform medicine and medical research. Her cells have been part of every major medical discovery starting with the polio vaccine and continuing today with research on cancer, AIDS, Parkinson's and more. This book delves into her life, illness, family, the medical staff that treated her, the industry that was built around her cells, and ultimately questions about ethics and medicine. And through it all the author always succeeds in presenting Henrietta as she was, a very real person and perhaps an very real unsung hero.
