A testament to Richard Matheson's genius, the writer that made the twilight zone famous. Sort of. The book is written from the perspective of seemingly the last person in the world, left to figure out how defend his home from society turned ghoulish. The last man versus a world of vampires, a fun attempt at role reversal, a good read for zombie fans. Strange though that only half of the book is the actual story. The other half is a collection of other short stories written by the same author.

This is without doubt one of the classic SF/horror stories of all time. The tale of the last man on earth's struggle to stay alive against overwhelming hordes of vampires is intense, horriying, and ultimately tragic. This book was a major influence on survivalist horror such as George Romero's Living Dead movie series and more... the importance of "I Am Legend" cannot be exagerated!
This book is one of my top 10 'desert island' items. ;)

This is a classic piece of horror fiction and one that is highly recommended for fans of this genre. For those who are familiar with the movie version (starring Will Smith), this is a very, very different story altogether. Sure the setting is constant: our protagonist appears to be the only person (on earth?) to have escaped, so far, from being infected by a virus that turns people into zombies. He is the last hold-out of humankind and goes about his housekeeping and chores in the daytime while locking himself into his house after nightfall to avoid the creatures that are constantly trying to get him. The movie relies on action scenes to keep your interest. The book relies on more subtle, psychological terrors to grab your attention. So, even if you have seen the movie, it is nothing like the book. Pick up a copy of the book and get acquainted with horror story-telling as it is meant to be.

Brilliant book, I could not put it down. All I can say is read it you wont be dissapointed!
The recent film was good but the book is 50 times better. Don't go into the film thinking it will be the same, or vice versa, as the story line is very different. Both are good but the book is an absolute master piece. 5 stars +

This is a stunningly well written book. (What do you expect from Richard Matheson). Instant classic.
A living man trying to survive in a world where he is no longer the dominant specie. Follow his adventure from boring everyday labour of repairing his home to fast paced action escaping hordes of vampires.
It's insightful and engrossingly addictive. It was written in 1954 and its still great. I read it the first time and couldn't shut the book so I read it again. It's a short book but its a great book. A welcomed ending that satisfies.

I've just finished reading this - it's only 160 pages, and so doesn't take long to read... and it is very readable... Matheson captures the loneliness (and its effects) of Robert Neville, the last man alive in LA in a world where people have been turned into vampires by a plague after an unnamed war... fascinating, chilling; written over 40 years ago, and still a brilliant read...
