My father (aged 97) was dying. My brother and his wife were staying with us. He had been reading this book on the recommendation of his wife, an English teacher. He explained to me the Indian legend behind the story. Very early one morning he heard a Bookook Owl calling and asked his wife if she was superstitious because he had just heard an owl call. Ten minutes later we received a call to say that Dad had died. We all dressed quickly to go to the nursing home. As we walked to the garage to get into the cal, the four of us heard the owl calling about half a kilometer away. I haven't heard the owl again. I bought the book after Dad's funeral and thoroughly enjoyed it.
