This is the best book I have ever read on how children learn and what we as teachers, parents, significant adults in their lives do to interrupt and often stall the process. John Holt has spent years observing children and gives profound insights into the process. In a diary like form Holt gives us anecdotes of observations he made of young children as they learned all by themselves. He notices the profound difference in the learning style of an infant when they are forced into a classroom situation and compares how children learn best to the way they are taught to learn in most schools. An excellent read for anyone who is genuinely concerned about making a positive impact on the lives of children in their care.
