First published in the mid 1960s, How Children Fail began an education reform movement that continues today. In his 1982 edition, John Holt added new insights into how children investigate the world, into the perennial problems of classroom learning, grading, testing, and into the role of the trust and authority in every learning situation. His understanding of children, the clarity of his thought, and his deep affection for children have made both How Children Fail and its companion volume, How Children Learn, enduring classics.

Parents and teachers would be well advised to spend their time and money on a copy of this book. John Holt has put years into observing children and how they learn and what causes them to fail. As a result of these observations and teacher's and school's inability to step back and critically review their methods, John Holt became a major force behind the early homeschooling movement. This book would be helpful to both homeschooling parents and astute school teachers. I cannot praise it enough. The only other book I have read that even compares to this one is John Holt's other bestseller How Children Learn. I read How Children Learn prior to reading How Children Fail, but would recommend that other readers read this book first, then How Children Learn.
