Gr 4-6-By Louis Sachar. With all of the bad luck his family has encountered, Stanley isn't so surprised when a miscarriage of justice sends him to a harsh juvenile detention center. While the warden claims that the hard labor that the boys are subjected to is meant to build character, it becomes clear that she is really using the boys to hunt for a fortune buried by a Wild West outlaw. With an ever-so-slight Texas twang, Beyer transports listeners to barren, blistering-hot Camp Green Lake, the juvenile correctional facility where Stanley Yelnats is serving a sentence he doesn't deserve. If it weren't for lousy luck, Stanley would have no luck at allÄa condition that his family traces to Stanley's "no-good dirty-rotten pig-stealing great-great-grandfather." Stanley toughs out his time with an unflagging sense of humor, considering he and his fellow offenders must each dig a hole five feet wide and five feet deep every day with little water and the constant threat of poisonous lizards. But as Stanley gets into the swing of things, he and his new pal Zero discover that the warden actually has them digging for buried treasureÄtreasure that is somehow linked to the Yelnats family curse. Beyer's buoyant, boyish manner ensures that Sachar's witty novel, winner of both the Newbery Medal and the National Book Award, makes a smooth transition to audio. The short chapters breeze along for a thoroughly entertaining listen. Ages 8-up. (May) Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information.

Holes was an excellent read. It had a compelling storyline that intrigued and excited me. The writing was amazing and clear. I really enjoyed the book. The book left me feeling and satisfied and contented I would recommend this book for all. It is definetely worth buying.
I first thought this book was based on a true story, but I don't think it is, it's a very interesting book for adults and children a like and just has a certain something to it that sets it apart from other books that look boring, looks like a substandard generic looking book that fly by past your eyes in the library but you are in for a surprise.
I don't know if it's the story line, or the author's technique or both but this is one book I could never really get sick of.
Diging, diging, diging! The book Holes is about a boy named Stanley Yelnats who is cursed because of his great-greatgrandfather. Stanley is sent to Camp Greenlake for 18 months. At Camp Greenlake Stanley is told to dig holes for 18 months. Stanley runs away after his friend Zero. Stanley and Zero find each other and climb this mountain, the rest is for you to read. It's a great and adventurest book.
Stanley Yelnats is possibly the unluckiest boy in the world. 'Holes' is his story, unravelling the mystery behind his family curse, and detailing the events at the correctional camp he finds himself thrown into. The plot is filled with twists and turns, and comes to an immensely satisfying conclusion.
this is a really brilliant read, about stanley yelnats, who is sent to a camp whch is very cruel and tough in nature. he is under the control of the warden, and must face several challenges, including things to do with peaches, and numeous digging. good read for any one who likes books a bit out of the ordianry!
great novel, with a twist at the end. I would recommend this to boys and girls aged from 10 up to 14 years. It was also recently made into a movie reinforcing the popularity of this novel. Younger readers will love this novel and will enjoy following the story of Stanley Yelnats and no-one could possibly guess the suprise ending.
