This is the true story of a 24-hour period on Everest, when members of three separate expeditions were caught in a storm and faced a battle against hurricane-force winds, exposure, and the effects of altitude, which ended the worst single-season death toll in the peak's history.

Good book about the 1996 Everest tragedy that killed 8 climbers. Its biggest selling point is that it was written by Jon Krakauer who was climbing on that day, so its a first hand account, not re told through someone else. The down point is the unfair blame put againt Anatoli Boukreev. The man saved 3 lives and Krakauer somehow tries to blame him for some of the events that unfolded. Worthwhile reading along with Boukreev's book 'The Climb' to gain 2 independant accounts.
A gripping story, ably told by someone who was on top of Everest when bad weather and unfortunate timing combined to kill eight mountaineers. Krakauer is a good writer and he holds the readers interest throughout. Unfortunately, as a result of this book being published, Anatoli Boukreev was unfairly castigated for the role he played on the mountain that day. Krakauer seems to ignore the three lives Boukreev saved. Certainly worth a read though, in conjunction with Boukreev's book 'The Climb'
