YA-- This first book in a trilogy takes place five years after Return of the Jedi (Ballantine, 1983) by James Kahn. Han and Leia are now married and expecting twins; Luke is continuing his training as a Jedi, while training Leia. The Republic is at peace, having defeated Darth Vader and the evil Empire. Enter Grand Admiral Thrawn, ex-warlord of the empire, with his rogue Jedi knight. They attack the Republic and attempt to kidnap Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia for their own nefarious purposes. It's great fun to romp with the ``Star Wars'' cast of humans, droids, and aliens again. While it is not on a par with Zahn's creative, powerful works such as Cascade Point (Baen, 1987), Heir is well written for what it is. Recommended for YA collections needing a Star Wars fix. --John Lawson, Fairfax County Public Library, VA2-

At first, upon reading the first chapter, i thought "what have i bought? I didnt want to read about this alien thrawn, i wanted read about han and luke and leia"
But as i kept reading i realised this is sooooo much better than all other books i have read.
The way Zahn expresses his characters emotions and the way he had planned out all the fighting strategies was amazing!
A seriously think that if you don't ref this series, you've pretty much missed out on the whole star wars feeling.
The book itself is about a mysterious unknown Grand Admiral of the Empire who were thought to have been all destroyed, who turns up and unexpectedly succeeds in every combat with the rebellion, rebuilding the empire with his strategies that always seem to be one step ahead
This book is a must read. Timothy Zahn has a great talent for writing star wars novels better than any other author in any of the books I have read. I loved this book which is the book that made me like periods other than the clone wars.
Some years after the events in the Star Wars movie, the New Republic is beginning to encounter political problems, and having to deal with governing and routing out rebels.
Along comes something nastier. A grand admiral of the Empire, with a very potent battle fleet at his command, and a very impressive ability to utilise it.
The beginning of the publishing of 100 billion books of what I suppose you could call '21st century pulp'.
The novel that started it all. Heir to the Empire opened the first Expanded Universe trilogy in Star Wars literature history and remains the single most influential novel in the continuity. Zahn had the honor of introducing Thrawn, Palleaon, Karrde, the Noghri, Mara Jade and Coruscant. Only by reading Heir to the Empire can one truly appreciate its granduer, which everyone (Star Wars fan or unitiated) should do. True Star Wars continuity junkies would read the recently released Outbound Flight first however, as it provides some (albeit unnecessary) background.
