I have been thoroughly inspired, challenged and encouraged through the story of Brother Yun. His courage, passion for the Gospel and faithfulness to the Lord is truly an example to us all. A worthwhile read- if you dare!

The Heavenly Man documents many miracles which Brother Yun and other witnesses solemnly swear to be true. Hume's (a dead philosopher) argument regarding the reliance of testimony of miraculous events is that it is not reasonable to rely solely on the basis of a report that an event occurred, when the occurrence of the event is much more unlikely than the reports being untrue. Thus, because a miracle is, by definition, a very unlikely event, reports of miracles do not provide reason to believe that miracles have in fact occurred.
However, it is amazing how convincing something can be when a person as genuine as Brother Yun outlines his experiences as plainly as they can be put. The man has absolutely no benefit in fabricating these reports. In fact he was beaten, tortured, and urinated on for the sake of the Gospel and his various testimonies - so why would he make them up? The point remains that if God does exist, then it is no surprise that divine intervention can occur. Perhaps one's belief in such is entirely a pragmatic exercise; first we must open our minds and soften our hearts, before we can expect to understand.
I was particularly fond of the last few chapters in which Brother Yun gives his fairly negative reflections on the Western church. The sad truth is that he is right. Christian's in the west would have so much more witnessing power if they really did give up their life to follow Christ as many of the Christian's in China have done. People are well off, yet they give the bare minimum. We think we need a big fancy church building to embrace God, but I am fairly certain God is not even in some of those big churches.
I finished reading The Heavenly Man in just under three days and I was left feeling inspired.

An amazing true story about an amazing man whose desire to serve God resulted in trial after trial. I was very moved by Brother Yun's story. A must read for those who desire to do what is right but are timid to do so.

The inspiring, challenging, disturbing and uplifting story of Brother Yun, one of China's persecuted house church leaders. A startling testimony to the fact that religious persecution is still a reality today. At many times, it feels like you're reading a contemporary version of the Book of Acts. A profound challenge to the call of the Christian faith to take up your cross in floowing Christ - well worth your time and effort...
