This book explains how anyone can use simple tools and materials to create beautiful and graceful calligraphy. It also shows a vast range of ideas for using calligraphy in new and surprising ways. One of the authors has provided their calligraphy for use in the blockbuster film "National Treasure, Book of Secrets". If you think creating beautiful and graceful calligraphy requires years of training and a closet full of fancy pens and exotic inks, think again! Here, the authors explain how anyone can use simple tools and materials found in ordinary craft stores, as well as cotton buds, sponges and other common items, to produce outstanding results. They provide examples of a full dozen alphabet styles, including Roman, Whimsy, Ribbon Writing, Druid, Bungalow, as well as many decorative details. "Colour Photography" reveals more than merely the necessary brush and pen techniques - it also shows a vast range of ideas for using calligraphy in new and surprising ways.

One of my favourite lettering books - great for anyone interested in playing around with lettering. Sections covered include Tools & Supplies (incl using everyday items), General Info on paper, spacing, using a light box etc; Decorating Techniques, Alphabets and Creative Variations.
This is not a traditional, formal calligraphy book, although it includes alphabets such as Roman and Neuland with sample projects.
But it also moves away from formal calligraphy into more free flowing mono line lettering styles such as Clothesline and Bungalow - two fun scripts I hadn't come across before. There are also decorative elements plus great ideas and colour samples of work throughout.
There's a section on Brush Italic lettering using brush markers which gives an introduction to Suzy Ratto's wonderful colour layering system. As Suzy's book is now out of print (Color Layering System: Brush Markers), this section is a great intro to this style of decorated letters.
A fun book to give you ideas for playing with colours, tools, techniques and creating letters.
