I first read this with my Mum when I was 8. It is a really good imaginative story following Susan and her cousin Nick who are drawn into the magical world of O - a kinda parallel world to the one we live in.
Susan is soon identified as a chosen one by the unique birthmark on her wrist and see as having the power to save O from odo cling and the halfmen with the help of the various magical beings of this land.
You simply must go on to read the rest of the series with the trilogy continuing with The Priests of Ferris and Motherstone.
A must read for all children!!

A cool book, all the better for being by New Zealand author Maurice Gee ("Under the Mountain"). Susan and Nick are drawn into the world of O, where halfies rule and seek to poison the world around them. It is up to Susan to restore O to wholeness, with the help of the woodfolk, stonefolk, birdfolk and others. But will she be caught by Odo Cling and his fearsome bloodcat?
