Elena Poniatowska is a French-born Mexican journalist and writer. Her best known work is La noche de Tlatelolco about the brutal repression of the 1968 student protests in Mexico City. She is the author of dozens of works of fiction, poetry, and non-fiction. Among a lifetime of honors, she was the first woman to win the Premio Nacional de Periodismo, Mexico's highest journalism award, and in 2013 won the Premio Cervantes Literature Award, the highest Spanish-language literary award for an author's lifetime works.
