Is it foolish to think that one boy and a blood red horse can save a fair maiden and the throne of England? Will and Gavin de Granville have come back from the crusade older, braver, and definitely wiser. Ellie has been longing for their return. But they've changed. And home is almost as dangerous as the war they've just left. The king is missing. The country is in turmoil. And some men would do anything for power. What will two brothers risk for the woman they both love and the king they have both sworn to protect and serve? In the second book of the de Granville trilogy, Will and Gavin find their family - and all of England - in serious peril.
ReviewsGr 6-9-Layered with history and horses, as well as conflict, love, and intrigue, K. M. Grant's novel (Walker, 2006), the sequel to Blood Red Horse (Walker, 2005; Recorded Books, 2005), is set in 12th-century England and opens as Eleanor de Barre is poised to marry her battle-injured fianc?, Gavin de Granville. They are interrupted by Constable de Scabious, one of Prince John's henchman, who kidnaps Eleanor and burns the de Granville castle. Gavin and his brother Will are at odds about how to locate Eleanor. The whereabouts of Crusader King Richard I is uncertain and the English aristocracy is pressed to declare their loyalty to Prince John. When Will's impulsive rescue attempt fails, his horse, Hosanna, is unexpectedly reunited with Kamil, who' had crossed paths with the de Granville's during their Holy Land Crusades. Kamil carries word that King Richard is alive, then joins forces with Gavin to save Eleanor and Will. Though there are tragic consequences, the rescue is successful. Narrator Maggie Mash conveys the intense emotion and violent confrontations with genuine feeling, and gives the varied cast of characters distinctive vocal personas. Grant's novel is an understated exploration of the forces behind the conflicts that remain a factor in the 21st century. This recording will encourage a wider audience for historical fiction with modern day relevance and is a worthwhile purchase for middle school and public libraries.-Barbara Wysocki, Cora J.
