This is a joyous tale of life on the Hungarian plains in the early 20th century. When "delicate" cousin Kate comes to live with Jancsi's family on their farm, he is expecting a princess, but Kate turns out to be a tearaway and it is up to Jancsi's father, "the good master", to gentle her as he does with all wild creatures. Kate and Jancsi become great friends and have many adventures together including much horse riding, storytelling sessions, and being kidnapped by gypsies.
