Reviews
The first installment in the engrossing fantasy epic series, A Song of Ice and Fire, opens on a rigid feudal society in a world where the seasons are unpredictable-pleasant summers can last a decade and cruel winters could be scores of years long-creating a hardened and durable people. Up against the ice wall that separates the barbarians and mysterious wild things from civilization, the Stark family has held the north for generations. As the King's Hand, Stark must protect the king whose enemies covet the throne, and the most dangerous of these might be the queen and her family, the Lanisters. While the intricate, compelling story is told in many voices from many perspectives, Tony and Emmy award-winning narrator Roy Dotrice doesn't attempt to perform each of the hundreds of characters. Only occasionally using a different accent or intensity, the tale unfolds in the gruff voice of an old master storyteller enthralling an audience at a hearth. With his British accent and straightforward narration, Dotrice adds a ominous sense of intrigue and doom to the dark and fascinating tale. A Bantam paperback. (Apr.) (c) Copyright PWxyz, LLC. The book the Game of Thrones starts out deep in the dark woods beyond the Wall where wildlings and others move in between the shadows. The TV series closely follows the book and I can't wait until the dvd comes out. George R.R. Martin draws you into the world where betrayal and tension abound.
I highly recommend this book; in fact, I highly recommend the whole series!
I have read them all and loved them all. And because the newest installment is about to be released, I am going to read them all again!
This is fantastic stuff (literally). Even if you are not into fantasy, you could still read these and enjoy them, because it is not 'way out there' type of fantasy. It is more like Medieval times with some dragons thrown in.
This truly gripping and well written saga, is worth every minute of reading. Once you start, it is impossible to put them down.
The characters are believable, the plots are gripping; the good guys don't necessarily win. I have to admit, that at one time I was sobbing out loud and I know I'm not the only one!
Fantastically written with solid plot lines and characters you bond with quickly. Filled with political intrigue, a splash of old world fantasy and a storyline which has you hooked in. The most unique thing I have found in this is that it isn't formulaic with the "good guys" always winning or snatching victory out of the jaws of defeat at the last minute. A brilliant series!!
