Increasingly, Masters and PhD students are required, in their research proposal and in writing their thesis, to defend their choice of method. Students are required to be clear about the appropriate method to use when addressing a particular question, and to be consistent and true in methodology to the theoretical perspective that informs the research. This text offers a detailed outline of the major theoretical perspectives that colour and shape current social research; positivism, constructionism, interpretivism, critical inquiry, feminism and postmodernism. The author reveals the philosophical origins of these schools of enquiry and links the contributions of various disciplines to the practice of social research today.

Am just starting a PhD and found this book to be very useful. It provides a basic but broad overview of the scope of social research in an easy to digest format. It introduces many of the key 'characters' that have contributed to the history of the evolution of social research and places them within a broad schema that logically sets out the field. The Bibliography was also helpful in providing details of the seminal works of each theory/ist and was useful for finding what to read next. I'd recommend it to any research student wanting to get a grip on the philosophical consequences of their own assumptions about research - especially epistemologically.
