Many years ago my mum brought me a copy of this book and told me that if I ever felt down I should read this book. Well I read it and I can tell you that it really did change my life. It is an uplifting story and even more so because it is true. I only wish that I had read it earlier in my life as I believe it would have taken my life along a different path. Since reading it I have lent it to other people and they have told me the same. It is a book that you will keep for a lifetime and occasionally, when you feel down, go back and read it again and feel that your life is really not so hard or bad.
Everyone should have the opportunity to read a good book occasionally, and by not reading this book you are missing out on an opportunity. This is an amazing story of love, life and courage through the eyes of a man who grew up in Melbourne and then on the wheat belt of Western Australia. He went to war and travelled with stock, built houses and cleared land. A B Faceys life is an amazing read, and should provide the inspiration necessary to do something so that if our lives were recorded we could make even half as good a read. This is to be highly reccommended, however you should keep in mind that the only way you will know whether or not you will enjoy a book is to give it a chance. You could do alot worse with your time. Fantastic read.
I found this book was moving and heartfelt. I feel for this mans story as he grows up in Western Australia. It must of been a hard life. I reccomend this book to all who enjoy a good story and the Austrlian history. For ages 10+
couldn't disagree with you more. you would have to be completely lacking in empathy to not be moved by this man's story. it is not only an excellent story but a realistic record of how hard life was for our great grandparents. he writes without verbosity or pretentiousness.
although this is meant to be a sort of classic, i must admit that i found much of this quite lengthy book mind numbingly dull. The minutiae of faceys life just didn't get me going. Maybe if biography is really the sort of thing you are into give it a try, but really i can't recommend it.
