First, Break All the Rules is a refreshing approach to management that all must read. Buckingham and Coffman easily show how conventional wisdom has hamstrung managers and left many organisations flat. In their book they describe the skills, knowledge and attitudes approach which most know of however they suggest that the attitudes component is a millstone to manay managers. They don't use the term "attitudes" rather they suggest it is "talents" which are the almost nchangeable component of every persons set of competencies and abilities. They advise that these innate talents are embedded deeply in a persons psyche and cannot easily be changed. From this they suggest that it is a fruitless waste of time trying to do so. Perhaps they are a bit gungho on this as a great deal of literature suggests that brain is "plastic" and can be remolded. However they do offer a new and smart way of working for managers. A must read for any manager who is challenged by his team.
