DISCLAIMER: I didn't discover this series until after watching True Blood, so that has probably tainted me a little. I am very pro-Eric, Bill irritates the hell out of me, and I can't help but have a soft spot for Jason.
Now, with that out of the way, onto Dead and Gone. I was a little worried after reading the first chapter a while back when Charlaine posted it to her website. I wasn't sure if I liked the idea of all the Were's coming out. Then when I heard the fae were going to become a massive part of the book I was even more apprehensive - although I find Claude sexy, the whole Niall storyline hadn't really been doing much for me. Of course, Harris has proved me wrong - wrong to the point that I had to read it under my desk at work to find out what happens.
There's lots of delicious Eric, and a glimpse into his past. There's enough Bill to keep the pro-Bill camp happy, and enough ambiguity to keep everyone happy. But Dead and Gone is dark. It goes to a much more violent, unhappy place than any of the previous books. Sookie has matured and is now looking at the world for what it is - there's a hardness to her that hasn't been present before, but it's welcomed and needed. She's not letting herself be used as a doormat by those who have taken advantage of her in the past *cough JasonArleneEveryone cough*. This book is very full - there is a lot of action, a lot of relationship changes to digest, a lot of blood, and more sexy-time than we've seen in the latest couple of books.
Sookie and Eric's character development really pushed this from a B to an A in my opinion. Eric seems much more real in this book and as for Sookie... well, if she had had to face even half of what is thrown at her here in any of the first 3 books, she just wouldn't have coped. It's great seeing what a strong person she's become.
Not my favourite of the Sookie series but still a very good read. I found I got through this book much faster than the others & I'm not sure why because I tried to pace myself & savour it since it's the last one for a while.
Some parts (such as the Sookie & Eric bits) had me gleefully turning the pages with relish but other parts didn't grab me quite so much. I can't for the life of me put my finger on exactly what is missing from this instalment but I just felt something wasn't quite right. Perhaps her harder edge was more apparent in DAG which reduced the subtle humour that I’ve come to expect from the Sookie series or perhaps there was too much fae/were action for me & not enough vampire politics.
Of course it's an absolute must read for Sookie fans & I will definitely re-read it once I've gone through the series again.
Another great book in the Sookie Stackhouse series. As with all these books I'm left wanting more...May is too far away for the next in the series.
I have read these books several times and love them to bits. I can't wait for "Dead in the Family". Keep them coming CH.
I was excited about reading this book after reading the first eight books of the series and i wasn't diappointed. It follows sookie stackhouse's quirky life in a world of supernatural beings. Charlaine Harris weaves a very readable book about a telepathic waitress in the small town of Bon Temps, who inevitably strikes trouble when she helps 'supes' (vamps, weres, shifters and faeries).
I've already pre-ordered the next installment in the series and will eagerly await its arrival.
I have purchased the whole Sookie Stackhouse series from fishpond.com.au without any hassels. This book, like all the Sookie Stackhouse novels, was fantastic! Now I'm just waiting for the next book to come out.
Definaltey worth it this one! I couldn't put it down. Finally we find a little more about Sookie's life out and the battle for her love becomes more intense as her would be suitors attempt to stake a little futher claim in Sookie's life. Just makes it hard to now have to wait for the next installment to see what happens from here....
Another exciting installment in Sookies life. Can't wait for the next one! Though I didn't feel this one was as exciting as others. Looking forward to the new True Blood too. I like that it varies from the book, it's good not to know what is happening.
Dead and Gone was an interesting read with many questions and plot twists that were evident throughout the previous novels in the series either tied up or extended for future reference. Sookie seems more jaded and resigned to her fate in this chapter of the series and at times that leaves the reader looking for a little bit more in the way the character has been written.
All and all an entertaining read that does not quite mesh with the rest of the series.
